사의 찬미 [Hymn of Death] - 윤심덕 [Yoon Sim Deok]

사의 찬미 [Hymn of Death] - 윤심덕 [Yoon Sim Deok]

[The life running in vast wild field]
[where are you heading?]
[In the lonely world, rough confession]
[what are you looking for?]

[--This world which is made of tears]
[is it going to the end if I die?]
[The lives seeking for happiness]
[it is the emptiness that you are seeking.--]

------

[Those smiling flowers and crying birds]
[their lives are all the same]
[The poor life indulged in living]
[you are the one dancing on the blade of a knife]

-- repeat --

-----
[The dancing life engrossed in vanity]
[do you know you are deceived?]
[Everything in the world is futile to you]
[nothing exists after you die.]

-- repeat --

Yoon Sim Deok is a singer that ends her live with her lover in 1926 by jumping off from the ship that they were boarding from Japan to Korea. The song lyricist Kim Woo Jin, who was also Yoon Sim Deok's lover apperently has married and have children. This backstory made this song more popular and also haunted. This song 서의 찬미 [Praise/ Hymn Of Death] is recorded in Japan and was the last piece left by Yoon Sim Deok before she passed away. (More stories: Yoon Sim Deok)

This piece was adapted by Romanian Composer, Ion Ivonavici, Valurile Dunării or Waves of the Danube. It was later being adapted back by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin entitled "The Anniversary Song" which contain lyrics that is totally opposite from the Korean Version of the song. It contain a romantic lyrics describing the memories of wedding night and wedding life of a couple thus making it a must listen song during wedding anniversary. It was first sang by Al Jolson himself and later been cover by various artist, notably Frank Sinatra and Andy William.

Honestly, I like the korean version better because of its emotion conveyment was more impactful than the english version. And last night, watching Bada rendition of the song made the emotion more impactful with only two Grand Piano sharp keys and a Contrabass Violin and Bada vocalization made the song extra haunted and impactful. Eventhough Bada lost to Jeong Dong Ha rendition to all time favourite Kim Hyung Sik Like Rain, Like Music, I believe she has made an impactful performance that is hardly forget by the audience.

::Bada's rendition add the last line of her song with::

너 찾는 건 설움
[It is the sorrow that you are seeking]

  3. They were in love before he was married. His father forced him to get married to a "more suitable" wife whom he didn't love or want.

  5. The song... The lyrics... I myself am a lover of poetry thus am a poet myself. The loneliness I felt turned into words out of poems and I badly know how these two feels. When you are an artist you are easily consumed with emotions more of the negative ones that's why many famous artist decides to end their life because they believe something better is waiting for them out there that's better than the actual world they are living. The human world is really cruel and what they underwent was distressing... Suicide during their generation was more of 'only solution' or 'no other solution' compared to the generation we are in now.

Love is a very dangerous game coz once you are in it and you are attached emotionally that you couldn't let go it's when you start losing yourself thinking you cannot live without the person. It's a sweet yet vicious stage we all will experience in our lives. I'm sad for Sim Deok.. but at least her lover went with her and they both died together than commiting suicide alone coz your partner left you and doesn't want to be involved with the madness you are thinking. They were both in the same page as well as their hearts.

I love the music as well as their story. Tragic but Legendary.

  9. THIS IS REALLY SAD. I FEEL THEY WERE SAD EVEN BEFORE THEY STARTED TO LOVE EACHOTHER. THEN THEY FELL IN LOVE BUT THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES DID NOT HELP AT ALL, SO THEY WENT ALONG...JUST MY THOUGHTS

  10. I just saw the kdrama "hymn of death" last night and I would like to believe that they secretly ran away together and lived happily ever after and deceived everyone by staging a suicide. ❤️
